What Is a Bulging Disc?

The spine contains vertebrae separated by intervertebral discs. Specifically, these discs act as cushions. They also absorb shock and allow the spine to move. Each disc has two parts. First, the tough outer layer is the annulus fibrosus. Second, the soft, gel-like center is the nucleus pulposus. Over time, the outer layer can weaken under sustained pressure. When that happens, the disc pushes outward beyond its normal boundary. Ultimately, that outward shift is what we call a bulging disc.

Notably, a bulging disc is different from a herniated disc. In most cases, patients use the terms interchangeably, but they are not the same. With a bulging disc, the outer layer stays intact and the disc simply protrudes. By contrast, a herniated disc involves a tear in the outer layer. When that tear happens, the inner material can escape into the spinal canal. Both conditions can compress nearby nerves and trigger pain. Minimally Invasive, Research-Supported Treatments

Epidural Steroid Injections (ESIs) are one of the most established interventional options for bulging disc pain. Then, if the block provides clear relief, our team may recommend Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) as a longer-term solution.

RFA uses precisely applied heat energy to interrupt the pain signal traveling from the facet joint to the brain. The procedure is minimally invasive and performed under imaging guidance. Notably, RFA typically provides sustained relief lasting several months to over a year for appropriate candidates.
