Board-certified Pain Specialists
At PA Pain & Spine Institute, we specialize in non-surgical, minimally invasive solutions for spine health. Treatment includes advanced regenerative procedures such as the ViaDisc procedure, which addresses disc degeneration at its source rather than simply managing symptoms.
This Degenerative Disc Disease treatment in Chalfont is designed to help patients who are experiencing symptoms such as:
✅ Persistent lower back or neck pain
✅ Disc dehydration or height loss confirmed on MRI
✅ Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or prolonged standing
✅ Radiating pain, tingling, or numbness into the legs
✅ Stiffness and reduced spinal range of motion (degenerative joint disease)
Joint Pain & Arthritis Specialists
It typically affects most people at some point in their life due to injuries or overuse. It can make movement, various activities and daily life a challenge. Some typical causes of pain in your joints or arthritis are:
✅ Broken Bones
✅ Fibromyalgia
✅ Sprains
✅ Tendinitis
✅ Autoimmune Conditions
✅ Overuse or Injury
✅ Brusitis
Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is one of the leading causes of chronic lower back pain in adults.
Over time, as the intervertebral discs between your vertebrae break down, they lose hydration and height. Consequently, this can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility that affects daily life. Degenerative disc disease is not a disease in the traditional sense. It is the natural wear and breakdown of the intervertebral discs that cushion the vertebrae of your spine. Healthy discs are flexible and hydrated, absorbing shock and allowing the spine to move freely. Over time, these discs lose water content, collapse in height, and develop small tears that can cause significant, persistent pain.
We see this every day in patients who come in thinking surgery is their only option. In many cases, that is not true, and exploring non-surgical treatments early can make a meaningful difference in long-term outcomes.
DDD most commonly affects the lumbar spine, or lower back, and the cervical spine, or neck. While some degree of disc degeneration is a normal part of aging, factors such as prior injury, genetics, smoking, and repetitive physical stress can accelerate the process and cause symptoms much earlier.
Treatments can vary based on pain origin and other related conditions, but in general some of our minimally invasive, joint and arthritis pain treatments include:

Medial Branch Blocks & RFA, Epidural Steroid Injections, target nerve and facet joint pain, reduce inflammation, provide relief from chronic back pain
*This is done outpatient and does not require anesthesia

ViaDisc Procedure, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Prolotherapy, restore disc health, promote tissue healing, support long-term recovery
*This is done outpatient and does not require anesthesia

Medication Management, Topicals, manage pain and inflammation, support daily function alongside other minimally invasive treatments
*This is done outpatient and does not require anesthesia
The ViaDisc NP procedure is the most advanced regenerative option we offer for DDD. It is a minimally invasive allograft injection that delivers donor-derived nucleus pulposus tissue — the natural material found inside a healthy disc — directly into the degenerated disc. Rather than masking pain, ViaDisc works to restore the disc’s ability to absorb water and maintain height, supporting long-term tissue repair from within.
The procedure is performed under fluoroscopic (real-time X-ray) guidance, with the allograft delivered through a fine 20-gauge needle via Kambin’s triangle. No incisions. No general anesthesia. Same-day discharge.
“Patients treated with the ViaDisc allograft demonstrated significant improvements in pain scores and functional outcomes at 12 and 24 months post-treatment, with most requiring only a single injection.”
(Beall et al., Pain Physician, 2021 — VAST Randomized Controlled Trial)
*Outpatient. Does not require general anesthesia. Medicare may support this in some cases.
Fluoroscopy-guided epidural steroid injections deliver corticosteroid medication directly to the affected disc level, reducing inflammation and providing meaningful pain relief, particularly during acute flare-ups or when disc degeneration is causing nerve irritation.
“Image-guided spinal injections improve precision, reduce procedural discomfort, and more effectively target the source of discogenic and radicular pain compared to landmark-based techniques.”
(Manchikanti et al., Pain Physician, 2012)
*Outpatient. Does not require anesthesia.
PRP therapy uses a concentrated preparation of the patient’s own blood platelets to reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing in and around the degenerated disc and adjacent spinal structures. It is often used alongside other treatments as part of a comprehensive regenerative care plan.
“Intradiscal PRP injection resulted in statistically significant improvements in pain and function in patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease at 8-week and 6-month follow-up.”
(Tuakli-Wosornu et al., PM&R, 2016)
*Outpatient. Does not require anesthesia.
When disc degeneration leads to secondary facet joint irritation, which is a common occurrence, medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation can interrupt pain signals from the facet joints directly. Radiofrequency ablation provides longer-duration relief by applying controlled heat to the targeted nerve.
*Outpatient. Does not require anesthesia.
Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and topical agents are used to manage acute pain flare-ups and support recovery alongside interventional and regenerative treatments. Our team monitors all medications carefully and adjusts based on your response over time.
Degenerative disc disease can affect adults at any age, but certain factors increase the likelihood of developing symptoms earlier or more severely. You may be at higher risk if you have:
While disc degeneration is a natural part of aging, these risk factors can accelerate the process and increase the chances of developing chronic pain.
If you experience:
Early evaluation allows for precise diagnosis and more effective, targeted care. Left untreated, degenerative disc disease can lead to secondary conditions, including spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and osteoarthritis of the facet joints.
Symptoms depend on the location and severity of disc degeneration:
Research insight: Fluoroscopic guidance significantly improves injection accuracy and precision of delivery to the affected disc, reducing procedural variability and improving outcomes [Beall et al., 2021; ViaDisc NP clinical data, Vivex Biomedical].
Symptoms include: persistent aching or sharp lower back pain, stiffness after rest, radiating pain or numbness into the legs (sciatica), and reduced ability to bend or rotate the spine. In advanced cases, muscle weakness in the legs may develop.
Our goal isn’t just to relieve pain. We work to restore disc function and help patients return to the activities they enjoy without major surgery.
